There's a day for everything

The US Census Bureau just released a set of data on single living in the States.

It's all part of their Facts for Features set of releases.

Did you know:
  • 42 percent of Americans older than 18 are single?
  • 54 percent of that group are women?
  • American 65 years and older make up 16 percent of the singles?
  • There are 10.4 million single mothers?
And there's a lot more.

Great location for story ideas, facts and figures.

Airline schedule changes at 300 U.S. airports

USA Today did a wonderful interactive map of the US showing the losses and gains in flights to airports.

My My How people get carried away with their words

The writer of the below graf was trying to make a point but did it so poorly I had to laugh:
"An estimated 50,000 Dominican women are estimated to be victims of human trafficking, and this figure does not include either men or children"
Obviously the number does not include men or children becuase it is only referring to women.

And how many students have you seen stretch to make a point only to fall flat.

Even I fell victim to rhetoric over clear writing. In a story about Afghanistan I wrote: "Young men learn to shoot and ride horses at an early age." My editor scrawled across this, "And old men learn at a later age."
